How to Create a Typography Poster in Photoshop – Adobe Photoshop Tutorial
Today I will be doing a quick Photoshop tutorial on creating a nice little typographic poster. This is a very easy to follow tutorial I have especially created for Photoshop beginners. So if you are looking for typography tutorials for Photoshop beginners then this one will be quite easy for you to follow on your own. I have chosen to create a typography poster based on a quote on creativity, similarly you can use any quote or saying or just experiment with your own quotes.
Let us begin with the resources I have used for this typography poster design.

Resources Used
You can download these resources from their locations on the web for using them in the poster we will be creating:
Flower used: Download here
Texture used: Download here
Skarpalt Free font: Download here
Okay, let’s get started!
Here are the final results and what we will be creating!
Step 1
Create a new file named Typography Poster in Adobe Photoshop. Size it 18 inches by 24 inches, resolution: 300 pixels. CMYK color mode for print and RGB for web. I am using CMYK for this tutorial, you can use RGB if you like.
Step 2
Fill the background with the following color values:
C: 72
M: 66
Y: 65
K: 74
Step 3
The quote I am using in this typography poster is: “Creativity is a drug I cannot live without.” ~ Cecil B. DeMille
Use the font shared above and spread it across the background on a new layer. The font is in white color.
Step 4
Re-arrange the text in the form shown below. Experiment and you will come with different amazing forms. I have increased the size of Creativity and cannot in this phrase, you can do the same.
Step 5
Create a red circle and Twirl it. Go to Filter > Distort > Twirl. Value: -255
Step 6
Place the twirled circle below I to create a balance of colors.
Step 7
If you like you want you can create a copy of the text, reduce line distance between the type, liquify it and move it to the front of the background to create an effect.
Step 8
Next, I will be creating a nice effect for the flower I shared above. Follow the below steps:
First we need to clip out the flower from background. Use pen tool to select a shape around the flower. Go to Work Path, press Ctrl (Command) and select the flower. Press Ctrl+X to extract the flower out of background and paste it on a new layer.
Once the flower has been moved to a new layer, select the flower layer, go to Adjustments > Levels and apply the following settings:

Next, apply the following settings by going to Adjustments > Black and White
Next, while the flower layer is still selected, go to Filters > Noise > Median (Radius: 2 pixels)
Next, go to Filters > Artistic > Dry Brush and apply the following settings:
Your flower is ready to go into the poster.
Step 9
Place the flower at the top
Step 10
Create three equal sized rectangles with the help of rectangle tool. Fill them with a color of your own choice. I have used these colors:
C: 16, M: 0, Y: 17, K:0 for blue and C: 0, M: 98, Y: 98, K:0 for crimson
Step 11
Select the red rectangle and apply Twirl with the following settings:
Similarly apply Twirl to the other two rectangles with the following settings:
Step 12
Select the rectangles and add a texture to them. Right click the layers, go to Layer Style > Bevel and Emboss and apply a Texture by selecting a Pattern from the Elements in the Texture box.
Apply the same Layer Style to all the rectangles by right clicking and copying the Layer Style and then pasting it on the other two.
Step 13
Create a new layer above all. Fill it with white color using the Paint Bucket tool (G) and apply Noise to that layer. Filters > Noise > Add Noise
Copy and paste the noise layer two more times and change the Blending mode to Color Burn.
Step 14
Now is the time to add a texture layer. Download the file shared above and use file named: 20090513084b after extracting the zip file. You can also download it directly from here:
Add the texture below the three noise layers and set the Opacity to 19, set Blending mode to Multiply
Step 15
Create a rectangle on the top, fill it with the color values shown below and rotate it a little using bounding box (Ctrl+T). After that change its Blending mode from Normal to Color Dodge.
Apply Stroke to this rectangle. Right click layer > Layer Style > Stroke. Stroke size is 250 pixels. You can use one according to your choice. C:7, M:5, Y:6, K:0
Step 16
That’s it! We are done! The poster is ready. I chose to remove the liquified text from the background as I didn’t like it. But you can experiment and keep it if you like. It was just to give you an idea of how you can play around with text to create background.
Here is the final version:
